This outstanding film presents a uniquely Canadian view of the importance of Remembrance Day. It looks at the efforts of Canada’s armed forces in World War One, World War Two, Korea and Afghanistan. Students learn how Remembrance Day relates to them in their day to day activities, personal lives and friendships. Students are shown that on November 11th they should think of the terms Bravery, Loyalty, Sacrifice, Dedication, Peace and Freedom. Examples are given from their own lives that reflect on these themes. This is a compelling and emotionally charged film.

This film is of significance to ages from grades 4 through secondary. While this is a wide range of ages, it is the content and style of presentation that makes it of value to these grades. We recommend previewing this title through the preview on this page to determine the suitability for grades 4 to 6. There are some scenes of killed soldiers that may offend some in younger grades. As always all our films come with a 30 day no questions asked returned policy. The preview on this page contains half of the entire presentation which should give instructors a good basis to make an informed decision.

This film can be used for more than the unit of Remembrance Day. The themes of peace and war are just two concepts covered in this film. Others include the themes touched upon in the film itself, including Bravery, Loyalty, Sacrifice and Dedication.

This film follows the daily life of a Canadian Private in World War Two through the letters he wrote home and the photographs he took. Aware of the immensity of the war which had engulfed the world, his letters described in detail the daily life of a soldier and the lives of those caught up in the war. His photographs taken with a Kodak Brownie camera, were not put into museums or bound in encyclopaedias, but instead created a record of average events and average people engulfed in a war of incomprehensible horror.

His story is told by his Grade 8 granddaughter who uncovered her grandfather’s letters and photos after his passing. She combined them with interviews of two surviving family members who recall the dark days of World War II and the emotions of being in Canada while loved ones wrote from the battlefields overseas. This moving and thought provoking film was one of the winners of the Lawson Award for Literary Excellence. We are pleased to carry this film as a tribute to the many Canadians who served and as an example to students everywhere of what is possible to create through a combination of hard work, imagination and a striving for excellence.

Three words describe the 1950’s in Canada: BOOM, GROWTH and PROGRESS. For ten years the phenomenal growth rate surged and its effects were felt into the 21st century. The average Canadian living wage skyrocketed and the labour market tightened. It was an age building with mega-projects like the St. Lawrence Seaway and Trans-Continental Pipeline. It was also a time of war as Canada joined its allies in Korea. Politics were dominated by Louis St. Laurent, Lester Pearson, John Diefenbaker and Maurice Duplessis. It was the decade of the cold war, bomb shelters, bomarc missiles, Suez Crisis and the Avro Arrow. It was also the decade of Sputnik; Khruschev and Castro. The 1950′s also saw the onset of television, the formation of the CBC, stars like Wayne and Shuster, Don Messer and Elvis Presley and Rock and Roll. Through it all the spectre of Nuclear War was constantly present. Journey with us as we bring to life this fast paced decade. Includes commentaries by History Professors Ben Forster and Sid Noel of the University Of Western Ontario as they reflect on the events of the 1950’s and the changes the decade brought for Canadians. This excellent series is in two parts. The program is divided into segments which can assist an instructor in presenting different aspects of the 1950′s.

This film unfolds day-by-day, revealing through the letters and diaries of 10 people the momentous ten days that led to the Allied invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944. This excellent film also presents through the reconstruction of pivotal scenes, the stories of the three key titans of D-Day, Churchill, Eisenhower and Rommel. Woven throughout the programs are the stories of 10 ordinary people caught up in the immense drama that was D-Day. These include a Canadian Infantryman from The Regina Rifles, a German soldier, spies, double agents, French resistance fighter, and US paratrooper. All of the people portrayed are not fictional characters. Of the people portrayed, those alive at the time of the film’s production give remarkable and often moving interviews. This excellent film is well suited for a unit on not just Remembrance Day but on such themes as War, Nationalism, Prejudice and Racism. At 100 minutes in total playing time, this program can be divided into segments by an instructor to be used at various times during a classroom presentation to allow time for discussion and reflection.

These Native Nations had perhaps the richest of Aboriginal cultures in Canada. They lived in a world unlike any other. The Pacific Ocean provided food in abundance and rainforests yielded enormous logs for huge homes, amazing canoes and intricate totems. These same forests were alive with wild animals for food and clothing. While other First Nations of Canada spent so much of their time searching and hunting for food, these people had time to form a complex society of a ruling class, commoners, freemen and slaves. They developed a society steeped in tradition, culture, myths and structure. Their desire for wealth and status among their peers led to the potlatch ceremony. Their manner of dress was highly ornamental and clothing was cleverly woven from strips of inner cedar bark, as well as mountain goat wool, birds’ down and animal fur. Their homes were unique among all First Nations as they crafted enormous cedar plank homes that could house forty to sixty people. Their artwork in everything from totem poles and masks to clothing was distinct among all First Nations of Canada. This program explores their world including dwellings, food, canoes, clothing (chilkat clothing), tools, potlatch ceremony, spirits and shamans, art including totem poles, society, warfare, arrival of the Europeans, destruction of much of their way of life and people, and the revival of their culture and traditions.

This excellent film will be of significant value for your grade 8 to 12 students. The heart of our Parliamentary Democracy is the simple act of casting a ballot. Every election shapes Canada and sets the direction our nation will follow. Yet less than 25 percent of young voters between the ages of 18 to 24 cast a ballot. Even fewer take an active role in the electoral process. This film is aimed at educating students before they reach voting age to motivate them to become interested, involved and informed voters. Students from across Canada, discuss their views and concerns with Elections and their role as young voters in our democracy. Other interviews include a candidate from the Liberal Party, Conservative Party, NDP and Green Party, and two University Professors who discuss the students’ views and opinions on such topics as:

Does a vote count

Do young voters feel disconnected from the electoral process

Are politicians dishonest with voters

Are there any significant differences between the major political parties

Does the media present a reasonable unbiaded view

How can students become informed voters and much more
