Grades 5 to 8
This
excellent program will form a major part of your Remembrance Day ceremonies.
Designed for grades 5 through 8, many other grade levels will also find this
videocassette of interest. The video brings home to students the value of
this important day. Through personal association, students learn how Remembrance
Day does relate to them in their day to day activities, personal lives and
friendships. This program can also be used when studying the topics of war
and peace. Canadian content is dominant.
The
program first explains why Remembrance Day is important. The role played
by Canadians in World War I, World War II and the Korean War is discussed.
Statistics include Canadian losses and involvement during all three major
conflicts.
The
program then points out to students, that these wars all occurred before they or
their parents were born, so why should Remembrance Day be important to
them? Students are shown that on November 11th they should think of of the
words Bravery, Loyalty, Sacrifice, Dedication, Peace and Freedom. The
students are given samples from their own lives that reflect on these
words. They are then shown how these words relate to the many Canadians
who served and those who died.
The
program ends by telling students that on November 11th they should wear their
poppy, as they now know why Canadians served in these wars - to bring freedom to
other citizens of other countries, to bring peace and to try to bring an end to
war so that future generations would never have to face the agony and horror of
war.
This
is a compelling program which, in just 13 minutes of duration, explains the
value of this important day to young students.
